As part of INSTAL, an experimental music festival organised by Arika, the public were invited to present a 3 hour segment as a finale to the excellent festival. One of the myriad of elements that took place in that mad evening after 9 hours of suffering, anxiety, chaos, disconnect, reconnect and dispersion was "the mixer". One of the layers in the mix you are about to hear is the fragmented reading of Stevphen Shukaitis' excellent book "Imaginal Machines: Autonomy & Self-Organization in the Revolutions of Everyday Life", as strangers select passages, phrases or even punctuation to read, the mesh of a Fake cover band(?), instructions for how to carry out anarchic disruptions, and various deep squeals from the subconscious unknowing can be heard and celebrated. A sad happiness of our individualistic collectivity or a joyous YES to the power of what we can do given time, space and a lil trust.

“If you have ever had someone say to you, ‘okay it’s fine to criticize but what would you do?’ this is the book for you. Shukaitis takes us on a raucous ride through actually existing alternative organizations that are anarchic, loving, fun, and best of all they work. We meet people and organizations who imagine a completely different way of being together in the world. ------------------------------------------fALSE ---- ELEVATION OF A THINKER

Anti-colonialist thinker, writer and revolutionary Frantz Fanon died fifty years ago today, on December 6, 1961
To mark the anniversary, here's an extract from Jean-Paul Sartre's preface to The Wretched of the Earth, published in Fanon's final year

Not so very long ago, the earth numbered two thousand million inhabitants: five hundred million men, and one thousand five hundred million natives. The former had the Word; the others had the use of it. Between the two there were hired kinglets, overlords and a bourgeoisie, sham from beginning to end, which served as go-betweens. In the colonies the truth stood naked, but the citizens of the mother country preferred it with clothes on: the native had to love them, something in the way mothers are loved. The European élite undertook to manufacture a native élite. They picked out promising adolescents; they branded them, as with a red-hot iron, with the principles of western culture, they stuffed their mouths full with high-sounding phrases, grand glutinous words that stuck to the teeth. After a short stay in the mother country they were sent home, whitewashed. These walking lies had nothing left to say to their brothers; they only echoed. From Paris, from London, from Amsterdam we would utter the words ‘Parthenon! Brotherhood!' and somewhere in Africa or Asia lips would open ... thenon! ... therhood!' It was the golden age.
It came to an end; the mouths opened by themselves; the yellow and black voices still spoke of our humanism but only to reproach us with our inhumanity. We listened without displeasure to these polite statements of resentment, at first with proud amazement. What? They are able to talk by themselves? Just look at what we have made of them! We did not doubt but that they would accept our ideals, since they accused us of not being faithful to them. Then, indeed, Europe could believe in her mission; she had hellenized the Asians; she had created a new breed, the Graeco-Latin Negroes. We might add, quite between ourselves, as men of the world: ‘After all, let them bawl their heads off, it relieves their feelings; dogs that bark don't bite.'

Marxism 2011 posted by lenin

"Please note that Marxism 2011 has started. Last night's opening rally with Kemal Abu Aita of the Egyptian Tax Collectors' Union was reportedly electric. Don't forget my meeting, which is on Monday: 'David Cameron & the “big society”, Gustave Tuck, 10-11.15am. "

The Arab Revolts
Egyptian workers protestMeetings include Eyewitnesses to Revolution - hear from the activists who were there when it happened. Speakers include Egyptian revolutionary socialist Sameh Naguib, while Tariq Ali and Alex Callinicos analyse events, and Sami Ramadani and Haifa Zangana look at theprospects for Iraq.
We have a course of meetings aboutUnderstanding Revolution, as well as meetings on Marxism and the Middle East and Palestine and Zionism.
Trade unions, the student revolt and the struggle against austerity
Student protest at MillbankThe British government is imposing cutson a scale not seen since the 1930s - but there has been huge resistance, such as the student revolt and the TUC demo in March. How do we make these the start of something bigger that can beat the Con-Dems?
Speakers include Mark Serwotka, leader of the PCS, and grassroots activists. We have meetings on Austerity in Europe and The Police and Civil Liberties, as well as The Student Revolt and From the Welfare State to Austerity Britain, including Tony Benn.
The return of Marx
Karl MarxThe inability of mainstream economics to explain the crisis has led to an explosion of interest in Marxist ideas abouteconomics and philosophy. we bring together many of the best known radical economists and philosophers. Our meetings range from basic explanationsof Marxist ideas to cutting edge debates.
We have two courses of three meetings each which give a basic introduction to the Marxist method and Marxist economics. We have meetings on Capitalism and Crisis and a course on debates in Marxist economics.
We have a course on debates in Marxism and philosophy, and speakers at Marxism include István MészárosAlex CallinicosAlberto Toscano,Peter HallwardNina Power and Terry Eagleton.
Anti-racism and anti-fascism
Anti EDL and BNP placardThe crisis has led to political polarisation. Across Europe violence and discrimination against Roma and Muslims are on the rise.
America has seen violent Islamophobic and anti-immigrant protests, while in Britain we have the English Defence League and the Nazi British National Party.
At a major rally Salma Yaqoob, Martin Smith and Michael Rosen explain why we defend multiculturalism Sat, 3.45pm, while Anindya Bhattarcharyya tackles the arguments around multiculturalism and ‘Blue Labour’ Sun, 10am.
  • Joint secretary of Unite Against Fascism Weyman Bennett analyses the EDL and asks how we can stop them Sun, 7pm
  • Thirty years on, Paul Gilroy examines how the 1981 riots have changed Britain Sun, 3.45pm.
  • We also have a whole range of meetings discussing the nature of fascism and the lessons history holds for fighting it.
Anarchism and autonomism
Woman with CNT-FAI anarchist flagThe student movement has thrown up a myriad of questions about strategy and tactics, and has seen many turn toanarchist and automomist ideas. We have a whole theme on Anarchism and autonomism as well as a debate between Andy Durgan and Stuart Christie on The Spanish Civil War. Andy was the historical adviser to Ken Loach for Land and Freedom and Stuart was imprisoned for an assassination attempt on Franco as well as more recently the author of Granny Made me an Anarchist.
What's wrong with America?
The hope that surrounded Barack Obama’s election has melted away. Still bogged down in Afghanistan, and still lacking a health service, America is suffering from high unemployment and the worst housing crisis in decades.
  • Jonathan Neale asks, after Wisconsin: is the working class about to explode?
    Sat, 7pm
  • Other meetings include The Tea Party: How scared should we be? Sat, 10am and Obama: what happened to all the hope? Fri, 7pm.
  • John Newsinger looks at America’s hidden radical history of resistance to the Great Depression Sun, 3.45pm.
Environmentalism
  • Atomic power? No thanks! badgeAcclaimed eco-socialist John Bellamy Foster discusses Marxism & Ecology Sun, 3.45pm, while we ask whether socialism would be sustainable Fri, 11.45am.
  • Fred Pearce, one of Britain’s best-known science writers, and author of Peoplequake, demolishes the myth that overpopulation causes famine and climate change Mon, 11.45am, while Suzanne Jeffery looks at the links between global warming, food crises and revolutions Sun, 2pm
  • Meltdown in Japan has put the question of nuclear power back on the agenda – we ask is it a gamble worth taking? Fri, 2pm.
Sexual liberation
The last few years have seen a growth in women’s and LGBT movements, in part as a response to rising homophobia and the growing acceptability of grossly sexist raunch culture. There are more fundamental questions too, such as why formal equality in the eyes of the law hasn’t led to the end of oppression.
  • A course on women’s liberation looks at socialism and feminism Mon, 10am and the ‘SlutWalk’ phenomenon Fri, 7pm while Sheila McGregor introduces Engels’ classic The Origin of the Family, Private Property and the State Sat, 3.45pm.

piece on uk uncut arrests

How the prosecution of UK Uncut is falling apart here, by Sarah Morrison in the Independent:
‘Mike Schwarz, a solicitor for Bindmans – the law firm representing about 110 of the UK Uncut protesters – said he thought the arrests and prosecutions “appeared to be carried out for political and illogical reasons”. He said he had made representations for all cases against his clients, aged between 18 and 60, to be dropped.’
Adam Ramsay, a 25-year-old protester who was detained for 22 hours at Ilford police station after the occupation and now faces court next week, said: “It’s great to see so many calling for the charges to be dropped. No one benefits from me being sent to court next week, or from paying anti-terrorism officers to spend hours trawling through my confiscated phone and clothes. Why are they wasting vast resources to charge people with sitting peacefully in a shop, while doing almost nothing to catch tax-dodgers?”
How the case unfolded
*Saturday 26 March: 146 UK Uncut demonstrators are arrested by the Metropolitan Police on charges of aggravated trespass for occupying the central London department store, Fortnum & Mason.
*Sunday 27 March: Activists are released from various London police stations after spending up to 24 hours in prison cells.
*Tuesday 28 June: The CPS takes the decision to discontinue the cases against five minors because they are not thought to be in the public interest.
*Tuesday 5 July: The first 13 defendants who have been selected by the CPS are due to appear at City of Westminster magistrates’ court to enter their plea. Seventeen others have also been selected to appear before magistrates, but dates have not been finalised yet.
*November: The 30 cases so far selected by the CPS are expected to start in autumn. Trials could go on until early next year, according to lawyers.
